Remembering Great Apes

Created by Margot Raggett

Remembering Great Apes is the third book in the Remembering Wildlife series and by covering gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans, is our most ambitious yet. Once again many of the world’s top wildlife photographers, from Tim Laman to Brent Stirton, Art Wolfe to Frans Lanting, have already answered our call to donate images and the book will feature more than 70 stunning photographs.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Fundraising update and new Kickstarter beginning tomorrow!
about 5 years ago – Thu, Mar 04, 2021 at 11:52:09 PM

Hello everyone, it has been a while since we’ve communicated with our supporters here on our progress since Remembering Great Apes was published, so we wanted to send you a quick update to say that the series has now raised over $1 MILLION USD for conservation projects to date! I know many of you are serial supporters (THANK YOU) so sorry if you see this message from me multiple times today but I wanted to let all past supporters know this news, thank you for all your previous support and also to let you know that we have a new Kickstarter for the 6th book in the series starting tomorrow.

Over the course of the past five years we've managed to translate every £1 someone like you supported us with on Kickstarter, into an eventual donation worth £1.30. We've supported 49 projects in 23 countries . You can read more about many of them and other previous donations on our website here which we will be updating again soon, as the current page has become too full! We've also put a video together here about the story of the series over the past five years, which you might enjoy watching.

The 6th book in the Remembering Wildlife series will be on African Wild Dogs. The wild dog is one of the world’s most endangered mammals but also far less known than other species that we’ve featured in the series so far, such as cheetah and lions. They face just as many threats however, from habitat loss to disease and of course conflict with humans. We believe they deserve their story to be told just as much as the other animals we’ve highlighted so far but as ever, we need help to get their book made. We are therefore be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund this year's book tomorrow (Friday 5th March) at around 9am UK time. If you’d like to sign up for an alert once we go live, click here.

As with all of our previous books, this project is only made possible by the generous donation of images for the book by over 70 of the world's best wildlife photographers, working together under the banner of 'Wildlife Photographers United'. Contributors this year include Marsel van Oosten, Jonathan and Angela Scott, Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting, Greg du Toit, Charlie Hamilton James and many more.

Rewards will be as wonderful and as tempting as in previous years, from safaris to camera gear, bespoke jewellery to original artworks...and of course the books themselves. We hope many of you will want to add this to your collection of our books, because of course, none of us want to just remember them in picture books.

With gratitude,

Margot Raggett (founder) & the Remembering Wildlife team "Team Wildlife"

URGENT UPDATE - REVISED DATE FOR KICKSTARTER NOW 22ND FEB

We are deeply frustrated to say that our Kickstarter for Remembering Lions has had to be moved back one week and will now start at 09.00 GMT on Friday 22nd February instead of today. We have been ready for days but unfortunately Kickstarter are "experiencing a surge in demand" for campaigns and are unable to cope with the number of approvals currently! They therefore cannot guarantee approval until early next week and rather than mess everyone around with uncertainty, we've decided to move it back exactly one week to ensure the same thing doesn't happen again. To everyone logging on today in anticipation of supporting us we thank you, you can only imagine how frustrating this has been for us trying to deal with Kickstarter customer service to no avail 😔. Please please do come back next week and help us bounce back from this set back to make Remembering Lions our biggest book yet, we cannot do it without you 🙏

Remembering Lions Kickstarter goes live on Friday!

Following our last update on January 1st that the next book in the Remembering Wildlife series will be Remembering Lions, we are excited to let you know that the kickstarter for that will go live this Friday (15th February) at 09.00 GMT. We'll post a link to that here once it is live. Once again we'll have limited edition jewellery, books, prints, safaris all on offer on a first come, first served basis, so if you want to grab some bargains before they are all snapped up, best make sure you arrive as close to 09.00 GMT as you can!

Since announcing that lions would be the subject of the next book, we've been overwhelmed by the interest shown from photographers wanting to contribute their work which is amazing. We'll release an initial list of contributors on Friday's Kickstarter (including Marsel van Oosten, Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting and Steve Winter) but there will be more names to come. There is also a competition for further places which will run during April.

Lastly, here's a reminder of why we are pursuing this series and why we hope so much that you will choose to support us again. We use Kickstarter to give us the funds raised here to make the books, hire the exhibition space, print an exhibition and everything else associated with launching the new book. Once launched in October 100% of all profits are then donated to conservation projects supporting the species featured in each book. To date across the first three books we've now been able to donate £460,000/$600,000 USD including the following donations from the past six months.

£12,000 to The Jane Goodall Institute
£8000 to EAGLE Network
£8000 to Gorilla Doctors
£11,000 to Lukuru Foundation
£11,500 to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
£12,000 to Amboseli Trust for Elephants
£8000 to African Parks
£10,000 to Rhino Conservation Botswana
£8000 prize donation towards the Ian Redmond Awards
£4000 for the Sabyinyo Sewing Project for single Rwandan mothers
£8000 to Gunung Palung Orangutan Project

In addition we have £60,000 sitting in Born Free's bank account ready for distribution to great ape projects we've now agreed with them, including £26,000 to Orangutan Foundation UK - Program Indonesia - all of which Born Free will distribute in their new financial year (after April).

That's over £160,000/$205,000 USD so far this year thanks to the amazing generosity of our Kickstarter supporters, contributing photographers and to all of the volunteers, helpers, everyone who bought a book, print or safari, anyone who donated items such as paintings, jewellery, safari/lodge/camp stays. And that's on top of another £300,000 we've distributed since our first book published in September 2016.

Truly it has been and is on-going a massive team effort, so thank you to EVERYONE who has supported us so far and we hope you will choose to continue this amazing journey with us! Together, we are making a difference.

Margot and team
