Remembering Great Apes

Created by Margot Raggett

Remembering Great Apes is the third book in the Remembering Wildlife series and by covering gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans, is our most ambitious yet. Once again many of the world’s top wildlife photographers, from Tim Laman to Brent Stirton, Art Wolfe to Frans Lanting, have already answered our call to donate images and the book will feature more than 70 stunning photographs.

Remembering Lions Kickstarter goes live on Friday!

Following our last update on January 1st that the next book in the Remembering Wildlife series will be Remembering Lions, we are excited to let you know that the kickstarter for that will go live this Friday (15th February) at 09.00 GMT. We'll post a link to that here once it is live. Once again we'll have limited edition jewellery, books, prints, safaris all on offer on a first come, first served basis, so if you want to grab some bargains before they are all snapped up, best make sure you arrive as close to 09.00 GMT as you can!

Since announcing that lions would be the subject of the next book, we've been overwhelmed by the interest shown from photographers wanting to contribute their work which is amazing. We'll release an initial list of contributors on Friday's Kickstarter (including Marsel van Oosten, Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting and Steve Winter) but there will be more names to come. There is also a competition for further places which will run during April.

Lastly, here's a reminder of why we are pursuing this series and why we hope so much that you will choose to support us again. We use Kickstarter to give us the funds raised here to make the books, hire the exhibition space, print an exhibition and everything else associated with launching the new book. Once launched in October 100% of all profits are then donated to conservation projects supporting the species featured in each book. To date across the first three books we've now been able to donate £460,000/$600,000 USD including the following donations from the past six months.

£12,000 to The Jane Goodall Institute
£8000 to EAGLE Network
£8000 to Gorilla Doctors
£11,000 to Lukuru Foundation
£11,500 to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
£12,000 to Amboseli Trust for Elephants
£8000 to African Parks
£10,000 to Rhino Conservation Botswana
£8000 prize donation towards the Ian Redmond Awards
£4000 for the Sabyinyo Sewing Project for single Rwandan mothers
£8000 to Gunung Palung Orangutan Project

In addition we have £60,000 sitting in Born Free's bank account ready for distribution to great ape projects we've now agreed with them, including £26,000 to Orangutan Foundation UK - Program Indonesia - all of which Born Free will distribute in their new financial year (after April).

That's over £160,000/$205,000 USD so far this year thanks to the amazing generosity of our Kickstarter supporters, contributing photographers and to all of the volunteers, helpers, everyone who bought a book, print or safari, anyone who donated items such as paintings, jewellery, safari/lodge/camp stays. And that's on top of another £300,000 we've distributed since our first book published in September 2016.

Truly it has been and is on-going a massive team effort, so thank you to EVERYONE who has supported us so far and we hope you will choose to continue this amazing journey with us! Together, we are making a difference.

Hello everyone. Well the launch and our exhibition are both now complete and we are delighted to say that this is looking like our biggest year yet in terms of fundraising! We will post an update in a few weeks but we can confidently say we've raised at least £100,000 so far for great ape conservation. Thank you again - this would not have been possible without your faith in us and your support during our Kickstarter.

I'm delighted to also now share the slideshow of images from the book that we premiered at the launch event. Please enjoy and share with your friends.

They include four limited edition prints by Daryl Balfour, Greg du Toit, Nelis Wolmarans (our cover shot) and Jonathan & Angela Scott, two safaris (trips to trek western lowland gorillas donated by Journey's by Design and also to stay at the magical Greystoke Mahale, donated by Nomad Tanzania - please can we come too?!), the 50/50 limited edition book which has been uniquely embellished by artist Karen Laurence-Rowe based on a photo by Suzi Eszterhas and to top it all, a unique watercolour of an orangutan painted especially for us by award-winning artist Karen Laurence-Rowe.

Books being dispatched in two weeks!
over 7 years ago – Thu, Sep 27, 2018 at 02:01:32 AM

Hi everyone, thank you once again so much for your support and patience this year in waiting for your books! We are now pulling off the mailing lists for dispatch and we will be sending Remembering Great Apes books out in two weeks. International orders will go first, on 10th/11th October, followed by UK orders on the 12th, so hopefully your copies will arrive around our publication date of 15th October. We will send the books tracked and will email you the tracking information when the books are on their way!

There are however around 10% of you who have not yet sent us your postal address, which clearly we need if we are to send you the book! We've been using a company called 'Backerkit' to handle the collection of mailing details, so if you've seen emails from 'Backerkit' and have been ignoring them, thinking they are junk, please dig them back out and have a look! We've sent out another reminder, from Backerkit, to those who have not yet completed their address in the last week.

Finally, in case you missed it, we ran a campaign on Monday which was World Gorilla Day asking for celebrities to support us by posting images of themselves with our book. The response was amazing, with everyone from Pierce Brosnan to Ellen DeGeneres answering our call. Check out 'supporters' on our website to see the full list of who has shown their support for the Remembering Wildlife series. We are incredibly moved by and grateful for the profile they've helped us achieve for our cause.

Wishing you all well and hope to see some of you at the launch and/or the exhibition. I hope very much you enjoy the books when they arrive!
